Day Three Grateful Blogging February

Today the weather where we are is cold and grey and wet, but thankfully no snow!  It is forecast for next week though I think.  So later in the week I will be grateful if the snow doesn't come.  Not keen on snow!

I spent this morning scrubbing cleaning the oven.  Not a task that I enjoy, but I don't suppose that it is a task that anyone really enjoys doing is it.  Or perhaps you do.  That said I am grateful that it is now done and that the oven is clean again.  I hate having a grubby oven.

I didn't tell you but I received something for Christmas that I thought was really lovely and I wanted to share with you a little about it.  I did ask for this gift and was glad to receive it.  It was a full set of the Swallows and Amazons books by Arthur Ransome.  You have probably heard of the first book as there have been two film versions and a television version as well as the books (the 2016 film has Russian spies in it.  They were not in the book!).  I don't know when I first read the first of the 12 books in the series, but it was a long time ago....  I had read one of the other books, but none of the others.  So to receive all 12 was very nice.

As there are 12 books it is easy to fit in reading one a month through the year so I have set myself the little challenge of doing that.  The first in the series, Swallows and Amazons has been duly read and enjoyed and I am now on to the second which is called Swallowdale.

In case you don't know, the Swallows are a group of four children staying at farm in the Lake District who borrow a small sailing boat from their hosts, the boat is called Swallow and the Amazons are two sisters who live beside the lake and they own their own small sailing boat called, you guessed it, Amazon.  These are childrens books, but are still enjoyable to adults who want to regress a little and who want something gentle to read.  I recommend them.

Anyway to put that little aside, well, aside, what am I grateful for today.  I am grateful for the kindness of others and in particular someone who has offered us some things for our home which will be useful to us and it will be useful to them to know that the things have a good home.  So I am grateful for their kindness and for the things themselves and for the fact that it will mean that we don't have to buy these things ourselves.  Sorry I can't go into details.

I am also grateful that the oven is now clean, it was bugging me and now I can put that to one side in my mind.  Now I am off to start a thorough clean of our spare bedroom.  What a delight hey!

Hope that you are having a fun day, enjoying what you are doing, or reading and that you are not also spending the day cleaning!

  1. No, I'm definitely not doing any cleaning. Today I'm grateful for a lovely morning spent with enthusiastic children at the local youth band, followed by lunch with a good friend.

  2. I do not like cleaning much of anything so pretty much avoid it as long as I can. :) Can't say I've heard of the books and am pretty much out of the loop where movies are concerned. Not everything comes this way. I've got a couple of nature books on the go right now so should try to do more reading this month.

  4. I read the first book as a child but never since. Maybe I ought to look them up. I do enjoy re-reading childhood favourites.

  5. I think your gratefulness posts are a wonderful thing. I know that I need to focus more on the positive in my own life.
Good books are definitely high on my list of gratitudes! They've seen me through many hard times.

  6. Today I am grateful for friends and neighbours who invited us today down for tea. I remember the books well, we used to read them with the girls when they were younger. So I am grateful to you too Amy for bringing back some wonderful memories, particularly as it is our daughter Amie's birthday today and sadly we can't be with her.

  7. How interesting! I just watched Prunella Scales on Canal Journeys discussing this book. I had never heard of it before; now I’ve heard of it twice. No, I am not a fan of oven scrubbing either, but I also prefer a clean oven.

  8. If my oven was clean I would be grateful too, but unfortunately it's not. I'm grateful for the beautiful day even though it's chilly.

  9. Oooh, I hate cleaning the oven. I do like, however, cleaning the hob. Weird.

  10. I loved those books! Those and some other children's series spurred on my love of reading when I was a child and made me want to have adventures of my own! Today I'm grateful that my hubby comes along with me on walks at the weekends and patiently waits while I take photos despite it being well below freezing and bitterly cold! Have a great Saturday!

  11. I never read Swallows and Amazons as a child but really enjoyed when I read it as an adult last year (or was it the year before?!). I read Swallowdale last year and plan to read book three soon, then the rest!

  12. Isn't it funny how satisfying having a clean oven is? It just completes things, doesn't it?

Have a great week ahead Amy,

  18. I love a clean oven too, but hate to clean it...day 3 of grateful blogging...Saturday. Let's see, it was snowing here, my 2 plans had to be cancelled. I am grateful that it was a weekend and my husband was home and we had a cozy day watching Netflix. (I could have cleaned the oven...LOL).
