Five On Friday

Welcome again to Five On Friday!

Now that it is the end of the first week of December I think that many of us are starting to get into the Christmas spirit.  It is a little too early yet for us to be putting up our tree, we will do that next weekend, but as I have come across things tucked away I have been getting them out.  After all there are some things that are never to early to start as you will see!

One

Christmas music!  I am listening the these as I type this post!  In fact I have been listening to Christmas music for a few weeks now.  It is one of my most favourite things about Christmas and is guaranteed to start to get me in the right mood!

Two

Sorry about this rubbishy picture, the lights had to be on because it was so darned dark!  Christmas films are another way to get into the Christmas mood.  I have recorded a few from the television to watch, but they haven't been that Christmassy so far.  I will return to my classic collection of DVD's.  Christmas with the Kranks, The Holiday and Home Alone are always good ones in my view!

Three

Not a christmas one here!  This is to prove to my lovely friend Meredith that sometimes I am just as grumpy as the next person!  Does anyone else get annoyed by those picture game things for the captcha thing after you have left a comment on a blog.  The other day I had to select all the pictures of cacti.  There was only one cactus.  In the end I had to also select a picture of a hyacinth bulb before I was allowed to pass go.  Who are the people who decide what these pictures represent.  Do they know what the things they are asking us to guess actually look like....  Sorry, it bugs me.  I just had to get it out!  See, grumpy!

Four

Any guesses about this one?  Yes, you are right.  This is a patch of grass.  Just before I pressed the camera shutter there was a green woodpecker right there.  Then it flew off.  As I watched it - too far away to photograph - I realised that there was actually a pair of them.  They were wonderful to see.  Sorry that I didn't get to share them with you and all you get is the patch of grass!  Very very mossy grass at that!

Five

Cards have been winging their way around the world in the card swap!

I do feel that something slightly odd is going on though because I have very kindly received cards from some of you who I know that I haven't supposed to be swapping cards with!  You have been tricky and tracked down my address from other sources to send me cards.  Thank you very much if you have done this!!  It is so lovely of you and such a nice surprise!  Perhaps you could be sure to let me have your address so that I can reciprocate please?  I would love to send you a card!

Thank you to those of you who have sent me cards.  We will have a big share up later in the month, but I wanted to show you how pretty these are looking on my office windowsill right now.  I will move them to the living room later in the month when I decorate, but right now I am enjoying keeping them to myself!  Thank you!

There will only be two more Five On Fridays this month as I am sure that no one wants to be posting on Christmas Day and we will also take New Years Day off.  Just thought I would give you a heads up!  Although as I said, I don't suppose you were planning to post on those days in any case.

I hope that you all have a great weekend whatever you are doing, decorating, partying, working, relaxing or shopping.  I will be shopping!  Eeeeekk!!  Must get some gifts.......  Today is my first really Christmassy thing when I am having a Christmas lunch with some girlfriends so hopefully that will have me all in the Christmas spirit for the shopping......

Enjoy yourselves and if you have some time, please do pop and see some of the other Five On Friday participants.

Happy December!

Amy

  1. This is my favourite time of year Amy. Girlie lunch sounds good too. I need to post my card swap today, think you said today was D day. Sending you happy Christmassy wishes for the run up to the day itself x

  2. Good morning, Amy! Great post! - The woodpecker photo is excellent! :)
In many ways this is really the best time of the year, even though it's so dark, and some times even cold.
Thank you for hosting Five on Friday! Have a lovely weekend and enjoy your Christmas preparations! xx

  3. What a lovely festive post Amy, and fab Christmas cards. I haven't started thinking about cards yet. Soon, soon... A shame the woodpeckers flew off before you could photograph them, but how amazing to have seen them. I agree about those Captcha thingies, I can never get them right. "Choose all the boxes with a sandwich". But are they including rolls? Wraps? What is the thing on the top left even supposed to be??? Drives me bananas. I AM NOT A ROBOT! So yes, I completely understand how annoying it is. It's making me cross just thinking about it. Back to happy Christmas thoughts... I hope you have a nice lunch with your friends and that your shopping trip is successful. CJ xx

  4. Hi Amy, I see you are getting into the holiday spirit with the music and the movies! I have trouble photographing birds, too - my camera wants to take its sweet time trying to focus and it is so frustrating. Once in a while I get a good one. Green woodpeckers sound beautiful - I have never seen one. I haven't encountered the 'catcha' thing yet on blogs - I just check the box saying 'I am not a robot' and it seems to work! I hate all the pop-up ads - those drive me insane! I guess it comes with the territory......Your luncheon sounds wonderful. Hope you have a nice festive time. Thank you for hosting! x K

  5. Ahh birds, are difficult to photograph. They are so unpredictable. Wishing you a good weekend. x

  6. Lovley Amy. Like you I don't think those comment thingies are any good and I just bypass them and my comment always shows up, so not sure what their aim is. Pity about the birds, but small animals and insects can be hard to capture. Have a lovely weekend and take care.

  7. Like Beatrice said, just check the box about not being a robot and your comment will show up. I never do the silly picture thing anymore. It's easy to bypass so not sure what purpose it serves. So many lovely Christmas cards. Tricky, tricky indeed. ;)

  8. Ha ha love the woodpeckers! Good luck with the shopping, I really must get going too. x

  9. Oh yes, proving I was not a robot over and over again used to drive me nuts when commenting as Homeslip. Somehow I managed to create a new profile with Blogger or is it Google (that really does make me sound like a robot regenerating) and all is well. Right must get on with cleaning, shopping, garden tidying and a swim for my poorly back which is still aching after all the decorating and furniture moving. Have a good weekend Amy.

  10. I love the build up to Christmas with all the music, films shopping & eating etc. etc.! Hope you have a lovely lunch x

  11. Love the almost-woodpecker picture! We could have lots of those, could we not? The almost-squirrel eating the nut, sitting on one of the garden pots would be one I could take! The little blighter has been burying the nuts from our walnut tree in the pots, digging out the lovely rather-expensive Sarah Raven tulip bulbs and shoving the nuts in instead. You do have to admire his ingenuity!
I love the film The Holiday! If you Google it, you can see a website that has the lovely cottage in the film so you can look at all the rooms! It wasn't actually a real cottage, but a mock-up, but it sure does look real to me. I love it and if I lived in a cottage, this would be it!

PS Last night, watched the film Ruth & Alex, starring Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman (a DVD I'd bought) and I do recommend this for a nice feel-good-factor film. Nothing much happens, but I always enjoy watching Diane Keaton.

  12. Such a wonderful time of year, the music, films, cards and the hectic preparations are all part of the process. Hope you have a great time shopping and lunching with your friends. I am never lucky trying to capture pictures of birds either.

  13. Hello Amy, I've had the Christmas music playing on the radio since mid-November when it started to be aired and have been watching a lot of movies as well. A couple of Christmas cards have arrived and it's nice that some are mysteriously flying to your post box. ;-)
I know the feeling of trying to capture birds with my camera and all you get is grass or empty sky, your effort to share the woodpeckers is appreciated.
Thanks for hosting 5 on Friday.

  14. Happily, I've never come across one of those captcha things that you have to select the pictures on, just the Tick this box if you're Not a Robot. How irritating. I don't like the word verification ones either, they're so dyslexic unfriendly. I prefer to moderate my comments on my blog and leave out the word verification bit completely! Naughty woodpecker, didnt he know he was supposed to pose for you?! Happy weekend, Amy and thanks for hosting FoF. xx

  15. I have a photo of a chickadee that matches your grass, except mine is of my hand ... empty of bird ;) You are getting into the spirit of Christmas at a very nice pace. I was feeling a bit anxious earlier in the week, but think I'm okay with it all now. I pretty much finished the shopping bit (least favourite thing of Christmas for me), but still working on sewing bit (favourite). I haven't pulled out any CDs or movies just yet, but will savour those in a few days time I think. Must get something festive for the highway drive to see my dad! Enjoy your luncheon with your friends and have a happy weekend!!

  16. I love the grass photo - I've taken a few of those in my time; those birds are just too darn quick! We have Christmas music in the car at the moment; it certainly makes the school run better, although I'm not allowed to be an embarrassment by singing along to them in the school car park! Have a lovely weekend. xx

  18. How lovely having woodpeckers in your garden, a shame they wouldn't pose for the camera but at least you get to enjoy them yourself. I haven't watched any Christmas films yet but I'm looking forward to sitting down and watching It's a Wonderful Life at some point before the big day.

  19. Hi Amy - visiting you from over at Mama's Mercantile.....I had to laugh out loud at your #3 and #4. You can be so charmingly funny! And yes, those pics we have to choose to leave a comment? ANNOYING - I can hardly see that stuff - hate when it is used, if I can't answer correctly in 2 tries the comment is gone, done.

Let me know if I have that pop up- it would be embarassing if I am whining about it and have it on myself, haha. Have a fabulous weekend.

  20. PS Where is the card swap, and is it too late to get in on the fun? Just wondering.

  21. HaHa at the woodpeckerless photo. I have some of those usually where a duck or swan was or just its bottom up in the air, the worst to capture are Grebes. I haven't come across the picture verification thing on any blogs I visit but you can ignore the 'prove you're not a robot' ones and the comment still appears. Hope you enjoy your lunch with friends:)

  22. Good morning, sweet Amy! What a fun and beautiful post. Ah, Christmas music - always a must! I always tell myself to wait until the Christmas season to listen to them so the day after Thanksgving I pull out my cd's :) And Christmas movies - what fun and joy.

    Have a lovely weekend. Hugs!

  23. Your mossy photo made me laugh .......I've taken many of those types of photos. Woodpeckers are notorious for slipping OUT of the photo you were SURE you had. Cardinals are pretty bad about that too. LOL

Your Christmas cards are looking quite lovely!

  24. Fun post, Amy. We have lots of big things going on here in Fredericksburg TX today, with a parade of homes tour, laser light show and finally the parade later today, as well as shopping and wine tours. A busy day in our little tourist town.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not in the Christmas Spirit yet but still hoping it will kick in soon. We have a Christmas Lights Parade tonight in our town so maybe that will help. Have a lovely weekend Amy

  28. Hi Amy, I hope you have a fun weekend with lunching and shopping. I loved seeing the photo of the green grass. I'm never fast enough with my camera sometimes. Hugs, Pat xx

  29. Photographing birds is very tricky and I'm rubbish at it. They move too quickly! I am (in the nicest way possible) ignoring all your Christmassy stuff. I'm leaving it a bit longer before I get into a mad flap about it. Have a lovely weekend. Sam x

  30. Enjoyed your five this week, Amy. It's getting more and more Christmasy every day! I so agree with you about those Captcha pictures. They are way too small and not very clear.

  31. happy Friday Amy. that grass photo made me laugh! x

    ReplyDelete
  32. PS to my earlier comment:
Of course, Amy, it needn't be an almost-woodpecker photo! You could take an almost-golden-eagle one, or an almost-peregrine-falcon, or an almost-osprey! The list is endless, tee-hee!
Have been busy online and bought 4 DVDs to have for Christmas when there is absolute rubbish on TV - I read that the BBC has said that viewers enjoy repeats at Christmas! Well, they didn't ask me and I certainly don't like repeats. You can't take Gavascon to cure repeated programmes, can you? My outlay was just a little over £10 and what fun that will give us, and then I can pass them to our son, he can watch them and then pass them on to a charity shop.

  33. I do not have anything to link up today, but this sure looks like fun! And you have a lovely blog I can relate to. Off to visit a few of those blogs that linked up today, and get a few ideas for next Friday. Have a great weekend! Oh, I should mention that I found you via Mereknits.

  37. Hi Amy! You like some of the same holiday films that I do! The Holiday is SO good, isn't it? Home Alone is always very Christmasy!
Have a great weekend and thanks for hosting 5 on Friday!

  38. Amy you deserve lots of cards! Love seeing them. Love reading your 5 on Fridays! and friends too

  39. I've been listening to Christmas music for weeks as well and today I was listening to that very same Rod Stewart CD. The weather here is really awful tonight and, if it's the same tomorrow, I think I might burrow down on the couch and watch "The Holiday". I love that film - and I want to live in that wee cottage in the middle of the snowy countryside! :o)

  40. I agree there's nothing like listening to Christmas music and watching old Christmas classic to get in to a festive mood!

Thanks again for hosting this fun linkup!

  41. I'm totally with you on that captcha picture thingy - so annoying! And I couldn't help but laugh at your grass picture, sorry!! have a fab weekend and thanks for hosting #fiveonfriday

  43. Love Christmas music and always wait till December to play any. Haven't seen that captcha picture thingy.

  44. I love your Christmas film collection! Our son is just coming to the age to appreciate Home Alone so we will be having a movie date tomorrow with popcorn and ice cream.

I love your 'woodpecker' photo! Birds really don't like posing for photos, do they! We have two Buzzards that nest in the church ruins behind our house and a couple of months ago one obviously saw something tasty in our garden and swooped in. I was watching it from inside the living room and was just about to take a photo when it looked squarely at me and flew away. I was gutted I didn't get to take it's photo. They've sat on the roof of our house and couple of times when I've been outside but they are so huge, and menacing, that I've dashed inside until they have flown away! I think they are majestic but I would prefer not to get up close and personal with one! 😂 xxx

  45. I've never encountered the captcha thing you've talked about here. I'm lucky then because it does sound annoying. Hope your festive preparations are going well. And good luck with the shopping! X

  46. You are so patient Amy if I find it difficult to leave a comment then I will move on, time is too precious and it's totally unnecessary to have those captcha things on your blog anyway. I love your five especially the woodpecker haha and you so deserve those cards Amy you draw the blogging community together with your 5 on friday, card swap and your lovely blog posts. Even if I don't always have the time to join in I'm glad that they are there for when I can. Have a great weekend. :) xx

  48. I'm a day late again this week Amy. I actually had my post started for yesterday but then some unexpected things cropped up and it didn't get posted till today. Too bad you missed the green woodpecker in your photo. Those birds just don't co-operate with the photographer some times. I hate any sort of captcha as it always seems to take more than one try to get it to work.
    Have a good weekend.

  49. A lovely post...I love the start of the Christmas countdown and like you I begin with music and films. How wonderful you saw the woodpeckers...they are such amazing birds....my bird pictures always seem to be of the background minus the bird, I am famous for it! Happy weekend, Amy.

  50. Oh I do like to listen to Chistmas music too, it does get me in the mood and I love to sing along (when no one is around!). We have a green woodpecker that comes into our garden but they are very shy aren't they? Being a bit thick here today, I had to read your bit about captcha about 3 times before I understood what you were talking! Hope you had a great lunch.

  51. I love Christmas movies and music. My husband, The Grinch doesn't get into it so I have to do it while he's a work.

  52. Hi Amy! I just love Christmas music. It's playing on the radio now so when I'm in the car that's all I listen to. We had an orchestra perform at our church tonight - Christmas music - and it was just so beautiful. You saw woodpeckers? That is so exciting. We have one up in our tree - I can hear him but I've never been able to see him! Thanks for popping in to see me and have a nice weekend.
    Be a sweetie,
