Nice things, instead of being hopping mad

This week, several things that are small in the scheme of things have made me hopping mad - the most incredibly vile anonymous comment on my blog, and verbal abuse from a cold caller amongst them.  I was going to try and write about them and explain my ire to you.  However, after writing it down I decided that I didn't want to think about it any more, and so why would you want to read it all.

Instead, I have a couple of, I hope, more pleasant proposals for you!  I would love it if you would be kind enough to give me your feed back on either or both things and if there is interest in either or both of them, I will go ahead with them in the coming weeks.

The first one is this.

It is, as we know, approaching Christmas time.  The time we would, in years gone past, perhaps have got the address book out, and started writing and sending cards to family and friends.  However, the rise of e-mail, increasing postage costs and so on have meant that perhaps we don't send cards either at all, or as much as we might have done in the past.

Although I would love to send a Christmas card to each and every one of you there is no way that I could afford the postage.  So instead, I wondered if you would be interested in participating in a Christmas card swap?  My thoughts were that you could sign up to send a card to one, two, or perhaps three other people either in your own country or around the world.  They would in turn send a card to you.  It would just be a card, nothing else, to be fair to everyone and to keep postage costs down as much as possible.

If you would be interested, let me know below and if there is enough interest, I will do a post about it and ask people to sign up there in the next week or so.  To make it interesting I think that we would need at least 10 or so people.  I just need a "yes" for now, nothing else!

The second idea is this.

If you are a regular reader of my blog you will know my "Five on Friday" posts - there is a page link to them at the top of the sidebar.  I have been tossing around ideas for getting other bloggers to join in with this.  I thought of doing a link party, but that makes a lot of work and reading for others.

So instead, I wondered if anyone else would like to join me, at least once a month, and we would do a post, on a Friday, about five things of our own choice.  Then we would link to the other bloggers and our readers could then either go across and read them, or just view it as a stand alone post.  You could write about anything, five happy things, five of your favourite photos, five of your favourite quotes, your five favourite flowers.  Anything that comes in a group of five.  To keep in with the theme of five, I thought that if there were five of us doing it regularly that would be fun.

There is already one person interested, so we are looking for at least another three to join us.  I would ask that you are committed to doing this regularly - as I said, at least once a month.

So, if you are interested, leave me a comment and make sure that I can e-mail you, and I will get back to you.  If you prefer you can e-mail me direct, my address is on the "about" page, which is also at the top of the sidebar.

I hope that you like these ideas and that some of you would like to join one or other of them.  Joining in and having fun and doing nice things is so much better than being nasty and unkind isn't it!

Thank you for taking five minutes on Friday - or any other day! - to read this.  I hope that you have a good weekend whatever you are doing, whether you are an existing or new reader I welcome you all and wish you well.

Amy

  1. Hi Amy, I would love to be involved in the Christmas card idea. Do put me on the list. I'm too unreliable for the 'fives' idea, but would love to read what others write :)) Have a lovely weekend. xx

  2. Amy I am so sorry you gave gad this horrible exoerience. What on earth is the matter with people. My mum always said.... ," if you haven't got anything nice to say don't say anything at all." I think your words are so supportive and kind. So, Thank you and I am glad you left all that where it should be. In the past!!!!

  3. How rotten to receive a nasty comment. Ignore it Amy- you know the rest of us love you :o) I love your ideas for joining up but will decline purely on a time basis- I've been crazy busy this week and would hate to sign up for something and not be able to do it regularly. Good luck though- I'm sure lots of people will join in. Have a lovely weekend my dear xx

  4. I have had one or two unwanted comment son my blog but as they hav eto me moderated firstr by me they are never published. I just delete them, as they are not woth bothering about or even reading. Trollbeads have a christmas card swap like that but you need the persons address and a lot of people, even me tend to be private about that. Mind you there could be a Christmas card Linky

  6. I think both of these are great ideas Amy! I've been looking for some sort of swap or something fun to do on the blog lately ... all to no avail. I'm probably not looking in the right place. Anyway, you can count me in as interested in the card exchange and also I'd like to have a go at Five on Friday :) I've been spread a little thin this week with kitchen cupboards, so I'm glad I caught this post. Enjoy your weekend! Wendy x

  10. I'd love to join in with the Christmas card swap. Don't forget though that if we're sending abroad, the last posting dates are way before the one for sending in the UK so it would need sorting out fairly quickly.I love your Five on Friday posts but I know I wouldn't keep up with it myself so I'll pass on that but will enjoy reading what everyone else posts about.

  11. Ooh I'd love to join in a christmas card swap! Hope you get more nice and less nasty things headed your way this weekend! x

  12. Hi, Amy...a Christmas Card swap might be fun, and I'm assuming you would know about getting the addresses exchanged. There is already a Willy Nilly Friday 5 on Around Roanoke blog site that I post to on occasion on Fridays.

  13. yes and yes! I can't believe you got a nasty comment!! You are always so kind and thoughtful with your words. Oh well, let it go...some people are not happy unless they are spreading unhappiness and discontent. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  14. What I find amusing about nasty comments, is they are invariably anonymous. How cowardly of them. Good for you to let it go. I always think it says more about them than it could ever say about you.
I would be interested in the five on Friday series of posts.
    Have a great weekend.

  15. Yes and Yes, I'd like the card swap and the Five on Friday, though I'm bad at linking to others, does that matter?Sorry you've had trolls leaving comments, some folks just aren't happy unless they can drop crud on other.

  16. You can add me to the Christmas card list too. I think that sounds like fun.

But, I'm too disorganized for the "Five on Friday" thing. I'm so bad at carrying out a continuing idea.

As for nasty comments --- REALLY! I just don't get it. Why spread hate instead of love and to do it anonymously --- well, doesn't THAT say it all about the person who wrote it?

  17. Count me in to the Christmas Card swap, how good of you to organise it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've had a similar idea for the christmas card swap :-) ! I'm planning to write a card to every blogster whose address I have, but as a surprise. And leave it up to them if they want to send me a card in return... (And postage costs, oh well, it's christmas only once a year...)
As for the nasty comment - I know how you feel... Had some anonymous (of course anonymous...) comments lately as well. I was so sad about it for days, wondering why someone who doesn't know me, takes joy in trying to make me feel bad. But I decided it wasn't worth it, feeling depressed about a coward who doesn't even dare to identify him/herself !

  19. Sorry to hear about the horrible comment :( silly people. I would love to take part in 'five on friday' if there is still a spot :) xx

  20. Sorry to hear about the nasty comments Amy just ignore it that's the best thing I have closed my anonymous comments off anyway so I don't get them. I think both of your idea's are great it's lovely to engage others in what you are doing, I would love to be part of the Christmas card swap but I couldn't commit to the 5 on Friday at least not this year, I find it hard to keep up with everyone's posts and do my posts as it is but I'm sure you will get lots of others interested. Have a great weekend. :) xxx

  21. I am so sorry that you are going through so many troubles. My advise would be to not return with malice. What will set you apart from them is how you handle the situation. I pray that you will find a peace way of dealing with this horrible and distasteful problem. It is truly a shame that people in this world can be so hurtful and cruel. Again, I am sorry. I will say on a positive note, that your blog brings me joy and I love stopping by a few times a week to check in.

  22. Oh yes both for me Amy, they sound great fun. Sorry to hear of your troubles, I like a nowty cold caller myself.

  23. The Christmas card swap is a lovely idea Amy, I would love to participate! I am finding it difficult to keep up with blog reading and post writing just now but it would be nice to dip in and out of the Five on Friday as time permits. I have never had a nasty comment on my blog and I am glad for it. Well done you for letting it go. As for cold callers, I now hang up on them because a polite no thank you often won't do. Have a lovely weekend Amy. Cx

  24. Hi Amy, I'm new to your blog but would love to be a part of the Christmas card and Five For Friday's. I don't blog on a regular schedule but the 5 on Friday will give me a reason to be more organized. I'm in the US and would love to swap with people abroad. Thanks for setting this up!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have had people call here to sell things, and then get verbally abusive when I say no thank you...let it go. They obviously have a problem. It doesn't seem to happen often now, as you have the means to call the company back, but I had a guy who used to call from the other side of the US and there was no caller ID then to get back to the company..I would be interested in a card exchange with someone(s) outside of the US!

  26. So sorry that you have had a horrid comment, Amy it is quite uncalled for. I had someone on the phone the other day who yelled 'your loss' at me when I refused to discuss solar panels with them. I'd like to join in with your Five on Friday - I'm sure I could manage that a couple of times a month if not more. Take carexx

  27. The five on Friday sounds like fun. I'll look forward to reading the posts, thought I don't think I could commit to it, I have enough to do and blog about already, hehe! Rudeness really annoys me and I can't understand why people leave horrible comments on blogs at all - most of just don't say anything if we don't have anything nice to say! I think it's better to just ignore it and move on, rather than waste your time and energy being angry or upset. (easier said than done sometimes though).

  28. I was talking about card today and how the price of postage had distroyed the fun of Christmas card both the link plans sound fun.

  29. I love the idea of the card swap - count me in. :)
I'm afraid I wouldn't be any good at committing to the Five on Friday - but look forward to reading all of them.
Wishing you a happy and relaxing weekend. x

  30. I'm so sorry you had nasties to deal with, Amy. I don't allow anonymous comments on my blog at all. I found that that dealt with all the spam I was getting. Also, if someone has to sign in to write a comment, they usually tend to be nicer. Not always but then there are always some who just want to spoil the fun.

Good luck with both your card idea and Friday 5s. I'll just watch both from the sidelines this year. :o)

  31. Sorry you've had nasty comments and an unpleasant caller. I hate things like that, I tend to obsess over it rather for a while and grind my teeth. Although I know they're not worth it. I'd be interested in the five on Fridays posts. Wishing you a good weekend Amy. CJ xx

  33. Hello Amy, I had a very rude comment left on my blog this week also. I did put comment moderation back on due to that. I'm sorry about the frustration you have experienced; I know it can take the fun out of a day!
I wish you and your family a nice weekend. I have a sprained ankle and have been propped up all day in bed! ugh!

  34. Hi Amy, so sorry that you had a nasty comment, how cowardly of them.
Please can you count me in for the Christmas card swap, and the Friday Fives, unless you already have enough people. I'll email you my email address,
Thanks for thinking if these great ideas :)

  35. I am up for the 5 on Fridays!! Sounds like a blast pal!!! What a great idea! And I got the craziest comment on my blog too...I wonder if it is the same person....Poop on folks that have nothing better to do is all I have to say!!! And I love that Santa up there! He is too cute! Sending positive vibes your way Amy....big hug! Nicole xoxo

  36. Oh Amy, so sorry to hear your encounters with meanies! Sadly there is no shortage of them out there so we just have to let them know they don't count by ignoring them as much as possible. I never give cold callers a chance to say anything really. I just tell them very nicely I'm not interested as the receiver is heading back to it's cradle! If they say anything I never hear it! :D On the brighter side I would love to participate in the Five on Friday! I'm up to my ears with swaps at the moment.
Hugs and keep smiling my sweet blogging sister!

  37. So sorry about the sad person leaving a nasty comment, I had that but when I stopped the anonymous comments they stopped. I would love to be in for both, But it will have to be airmail as Christmas post has closed here.(NZ) So it might be an idea if you check with whoever you match me up with that they willing for the cost. I am willing for wherever..my email address is zanasjourney(at)gmail.com

  38. What lovely ideas Amy. I'd like to join in the Five on Friday, I could commit to once a month at least. xx

  39. I think both your ideas are great, but by the look of the feedback, you are going to be swamped, so I'll give them a miss for now. I'm not sending as many Xmas cards as international postage here in Oz has jumped by $1.05 in just one year. Looks like I'll be trying to think of something else for hubby's large family in the UK. Hope you don't get any more hurtful comments and take care.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Look at you getting all this organized and ready to go. I am sitting out the cards as I have no idea what is in store for me the next few weeks. But I might be interested in the five posts, but it looks like you already have oodles of people interested.
    Hugs,

  41. I just had to delete a rather vile comment from my blog this week, too. I wonder if it's a new kind of spam that's hitting Blogger? I do an occasional Five on Friday post on my blog. In fact, I did one just yesterday! If you need more people to join in please let me know. I would love to be part of an "official Five" group!

  42. Amy, you are wonderful and organised and three cheers for positive thinking!

  43. I can sympathize about the nasty comment as I received one this week too. I use modification so thankfully it didn't appear straight onto my blog post and I reported it. I won't join in with your suggestions although they're both nice ideas as I'm struggling a bit with blogging technical issues which slows me down. I've posts planned for the rest of the year and also I'm not yet organised in any way for Christmas. Take care, Amy x

  44. Yes to both of these Amy, lovely idea. Keep us posted. It's horrible when people are rude for no reason and I feel sorry for those sad anonymous commenters who obviously have nothing better to do in their lives. Chin up. P x
