Basildon Park and Downton Abbey

So, I have been holding out on you all!!

Do you remember this post?  It was one of my first, if not the first post about Basildon Park.  I explained that we had had some filming happening and I talked about putting the house back together again afterwards.

I said that the time that I couldn't tell you what the filming was, well, you have probably guessed by now from the title of the post that it was DOWNTON ABBEY!!!  Basildon Park was used as Grantham House, the family's London home (that has been often referred to in the series, but never seen until now!).

Although there have been various things in magazines and papers over the last month or so we have been forbidden from telling anyone until today.  So finally, I can officially share this news with you!!  Yay!!!  I have been busting keeping this a secret since the summer and unable to tell anyone.

You can see the trailer for the Christmas episode here.

Sadly I did not get to see any of the filming as we were not allowed to be there when it was happening, but I have heard many tales - Lord Grantham walking up and down outside talking on his mobile a lot, board games played by the cast while they are waiting for their scenes, and TA DA! newsflash, our house steward had his behind patted by Shirley Maclaine (he was very very excited!!).

So, Christmas Day 8.30 pm, watch Downton Abbey and get to see Basildon Park, and you can say, my bloggy friend Amy works there!  The rooms that were used were the Entrance Hall, Octagon Room (drawing room) and Dining Room, also the grounds doubled for Hyde Park in London!

We have no idea if the house will be used again in future series, but we do hope so, as it is very exciting!  So, come and see the house next year if you are in the area and you can see where Pride and Prejudice was filmed, as well as Downton Abbey!

I shared some pictures of Basildon Park looking christmassy here, but I will share some more on Wednesday this week if you would like to see the house looking as it normally is.  The Downton Abbey episode is not set at Christmas I should say!

Amy

Basildon Park know that I exist because I volunteer with them.  I would like to thank all the team for allowing me to photograph their work especially Neil, for allowing me to share all this with you.  Downton Abbey have no idea that I exist, I am just sharing this with you because it is so exciting!!

  2. That is so wonderful Amy - how on earth did you manage to keep quiet about that - well, it shows that you can really be trusted to keep a secret and that is a big tick in my book! I don't know when we'll get that particular episode over here but I will be watching for it, thank you! Hugs, Joy xo

    1. It has been very hard to keep it secret Joy, especially when it was out in magazines and the papers, but I did it!! The episode will be at the end of Series 4 which we have already had over here, I think that the new series goes out in "the rest of the world" in January. so I guess that you will get it sometime after that. Hope that you enjoy it when you get to see it. xx

    1. It has been very exciting Annie, but every day that I go to Basildon is exciting as you never know what will happen next, whether it be filming, new visitors or staff, or volunteers, or what is happening outside. Everything is great! I am very lucky, it is indeed an incredible place. xx

  13. Hey! Amy, we were visiting Basildon Park when Pride and Prejudice was being filmed and we loved the garden. In fact it made us really late for our ferry as we were on our way to France. We were the last car on before they shut the back door and were so lucky that they re-opened the gate after closing - we had a 2 year old and I was pregnant... oh how I remember that journey! thanks for jogging my memory with your exciting post. 2. Indeed I will Amy. I'm sure I would enjoy it - but I never seem to get the remote here - it mysteriously seems to always find a rugby match! Who knew so much rugby was on TV.

    3. Oh dear Sara, I think that your remote needs some love from you, then it might find some programmes that aren't rugby! xx

  16. Hi Amy...
You are going to laugh at this....
I remembered your story from last summer...we watched a new episode of "Midsomer Murders"...and the place looked like your Basildon!!! And I thought........hhhhhmmmm...is that what Amy was talking about???!!!
Obviously not...but this is even more exciting!!!
We love Downton Abbey...waiting for its return...
    And I can say...
My blogging pal Amy works there, you know!!! hahaha!
    Enjoy your week♥

    1. I remember you mentioning something I think about Midsomer, it was hard not to let on to anyone, but I kept my end of the bargain with Basildon, I am allowed to blog if I kept quiet - so I did!! I so hope that the episode is a good one after all of this, and I hope that lots of people have fun looking out for Basildon. You will have to let me know when you finally get to see it - I wish they broadcast everywhere at the same time!! Midsomer is filmed not a million miles from where we live, but we have never seen any filming of that, but I do sometimes recognise places when I watch Midsomer! xx

    1. We have had series 4 here this autumn (not sure if you have had that yet) so our Christmas episode will be shown at the end of series 4 for overseas viewers I think. Might be why you haven't seen any ads for it yet. I think that series 4 is out in the rest of the world from January! I hope that you enjoy seeing it and that you can perhaps spot a bit of Basildon - which will only appear right at the very end I have to say! - let me know what you think when you get to see it! xx

  19. You know we shall all live vicariously through your brush with superstardom - I could say I am possession of a beautiful Christmas card that was made by the hand of my bloggy pal Amy, who might have touched a chair that an actor in an enormously successful television series may have sat in. I think the real star is Basildon though, such an amazing estate.

  20. Oh Leanne, that is so funny!! You can say whatever you want - or not! I agree with you though Basildon is a real star, I just hope that we get to see plenty of it through all the actors!! xx

Oh well, I'm not responsible for the story and I am sure that it will be good - no deaths or anything horrid apparently which is good news after last year! xx

  27. Amy, how fun! I am eagerly anticipating the new season of Downton, though I was terribly disgruntled at the ending of last season. I'm one of those who object to the Matthew character being killed off just because the actor wanted to move on. Another fine English actor could've replaced the first one.
